based upon universal human values as they are understood and practiced
by every individual and by every organization. At the individual level, leadership is true
when ones actions are consistent with ones knowledge and beliefs. At the
corporate level, leadership is true when the actions of
principalsincreasingly defined in a way that includes all employeesare
consistent with the mission, values and purpose of the organization. True leadership (small l) is therefore neither right nor wrong,
neither effective nor faulted in and of itself. When individuals
struggle with their values, or if an organization pursues poor values or
fails to address the values inconsistencies its employees may bring to the
corporate mission, the truth of such leadership is not likely to yield
the best outcomes.
However, if instead there is established a
standard of values to which both the individual and the corporation are
held accountable, then True Leadership (capital L) is approachable. People have argued for generations over just how rigorously
organizational leadership should be held to a common standard of values
and fairly serve all stakeholders. The difficulty has been, on the one hand,
defining a value standard in conceptually agreeable and measurable terms
and, on the other hand, raising up individual and corporate performance
to approach that standard.
Now a common standard strongly confirmed by
recent biological and social science research is fast becoming
normative, even essential. Our independently validated profile and
